Key Largo is the first and largest of the Florida Keys, reached by the Overseas Highway from the mainland. Its two coasts are very different: the Atlantic side faces coral reefs, while Florida Bay on the other side is shallow and lined with mangroves. The island gave its name to the 1948 film Key Largo.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the United States, protects reefs, seagrass and mangroves just offshore. A bronze statue, Christ of the Abyss, stands underwater at Key Largo Dry Rocks and is a favourite dive and snorkelling site. Ships sunk as artificial reefs, including the Spiegel Grove, attract divers. On land, the Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park protects a tropical hardwood forest, and Everglades National Park lies across the water on the mainland.
Key lime pie, conch fritters, fresh grouper and snapper, and spiny lobster are the Keys staples. Winter and spring are dry and warm and summers hot, humid and stormy, and the cooler months bring stone crab claws to the menus.
