Kauai is the northernmost of Hawaii's main islands and the oldest, worn by millions of years of rain into deep valleys and jagged green ridges. Mount Waialeale at its centre is one of the wettest places on Earth. The towns are small: Lihue has the airport and harbour, Kapaa and Hanalei have shops and cafés, and wild chickens roam freely.
Waimea Canyon, nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, drops in red and green layers, and the Kalalau Valley lookout in Kokee State Park shows the sea beyond. The Na Pali Coast's fluted cliffs can be seen from a boat or on the long Kalalau Trail. Hanalei Bay has a curving beach below mountains, Poipu Beach is where monk seals and sea turtles rest, and Opaekaa Falls drops beside the Wailua River.
Plate lunches, poke, kalua pork and shave ice are everyday foods; taro grows in the flooded fields of Hanalei, and coffee on the south side. Lilikoi, passion fruit, is baked into pies. The north shore has big surf in winter, the south shore is drier, and summer seas are calm.
