Experience the best of Kansas City

Kansas City, Kansas, is the seat of Wyandotte County, on the bluffs above the meeting of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, and is a separate and smaller city than its Missouri namesake. The Wyandot people, who came from Ohio in the 1840s, helped found the town, and Huron Cemetery, a small burial ground in the middle of downtown, is one of their lasting marks. The ruins of Quindaro, a free-state river port of the 1850s, lie on the bluffs to the north.

Kaw Point Park marks the confluence of the rivers, where Lewis and Clark camped in 1804. Strawberry Hill, a hillside neighbourhood settled by Croatian and other Slavic immigrants, has a museum in a Victorian mansion, and Argentine and Armourdale are older Mexican American neighbourhoods. The National Agricultural Hall of Fame lies at Bonner Springs, and the Kansas Speedway is in the county's west.

Kansas City barbecue, with its burnt ends and sweet tomato sauce, is eaten on both sides of the state line, and taquerias in the old neighbourhoods serve some of the city's best food. Spring thunderstorms can be fierce here, and the heat of high summer is heavy.
