Experience the best of Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is the third-largest island in Australia, lying across Backstairs Passage from the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide. A ferry crosses from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, and Kingscote, the island's largest town, has an airport and a small harbour where little penguins come ashore at dusk. Much of the island is bushland and farmland, with few towns and long stretches of quiet coast.

Seal Bay is home to a colony of Australian sea lions, which rest on the sand in the sun. In Flinders Chase National Park, the Remarkable Rocks are huge granite boulders balanced on a dome above the sea, and Admirals Arch is a rock tunnel where New Zealand fur seals shelter. Koalas, kangaroos and echidnas are common sights along the roads.

Honey from a protected population of Ligurian bees, eucalyptus oil and seafood such as King George whiting are island products, and the whiting turns up in cafés and pubs. Wildflowers appear in the bush in spring, summer is dry and warm, and winter brings cool rain and rough seas along the southern shore.
