Kagoshima stands on a bay in southern Kyushu, with the active volcano Sakurajima rising from the water just across from the city. A short ferry ride crosses the bay, and a lava flow in the 1914 eruption joined the former island to the mainland. Ash sometimes drifts over the city, which has long been used to it.
Kagoshima was the seat of the Satsuma domain and home to leaders of the Meiji Restoration, among them Saigō Takamori, the last samurai, whose statue stands in the city. Sengan-en, a clan garden with a villa, uses Sakurajima as its borrowed scenery, and the Shuseikan factory ruins are part of a World Heritage industrial site. South along the bay, Ibusuki has hot sand baths and Mount Kaimon is a graceful cone, and ferries run to Yakushima, an island of ancient cedar forest.
Kurobuta, pork from local black pigs, satsuma-age, a fried fish cake, and shochu distilled from sweet potatoes are the region's signature tastes. Winters are mild and summers hot and humid, with the rainy season in June, and shirokuma, a mound of shaved ice with fruit and condensed milk, is the local answer to the heat.
