Jacksonville straddles the St Johns River near the Atlantic, a river that flows north, and the consolidated city is the largest in the contiguous United States by area. Downtown's Riverwalk follows the riverbank, and neighbourhoods such as Riverside and Avondale have tree-lined streets, shops and early twentieth-century houses. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens sits on the riverbank.

Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach line the coast, wide beaches with surf and pier fishing. At the river mouth, Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island, part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, tells of slavery and the plantation era, and Fort Caroline, a replica of a French Huguenot fort of 1564, stands on a bluff. St Augustine and Amelia Island are both within reach.

Shrimp from the Mayport fleet, Southern barbecue, shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes are local staples, with sweet tea poured at every table. Datil pepper sauces come from the nearby St Augustine area. Winters are mild, and the beaches fill from late spring through summer.
