Jackson Hole is a long valley in western Wyoming, bordered on the west by the jagged Teton Range, whose Grand Teton rises to 4,199 metres. Fur trappers called high valleys holes, and this one was named for the trapper David Jackson. The town of Jackson has wooden boardwalks and a central square with four arches made of elk antlers. Most of the valley belongs to Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge.
Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake lie at the foot of the mountains, the Snake River winds through the valley for floating, and the weathered barns of Mormon Row make a classic frame for the peaks. Moose, elk, bison and bears live in the park, and thousands of elk gather on the refuge in winter. Teton Village has an aerial tram to a ski area, the airport sits inside the national park, and Yellowstone is less than a hundred kilometres north.
Elk and bison are on the menu, along with trout and huckleberry pie, in western steakhouses and saloons. The ski season runs from December to April, and aspens turn gold in September.
