Elba lies off the Tuscan coast, the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy. Its main town, Portoferraio, is a harbour ringed by Medici fortresses, and above it stand the villas where Napoleon lived during his exile in 1814 and 1815. The island has been mined for iron since Etruscan times, and the ground near Rio Marina still shows rust-red earth.

Granite Mount Capanne, at 1,019 metres, rises in the west, and a cable car climbs from Marciana. Beaches range from the white pebbles of Sansone and the sand of Procchio to the quiet coves of Fetovaia. Porto Azzurro has a Spanish fortress and Capoliveri a hilltop old town. The surrounding waters belong to the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, and Pianosa and Montecristo are neighbouring islands.

Fresh fish and seafood stews dominate the island's tables, with Aleatico, a sweet red wine, to finish. Schiaccia briaca, a sweet bread of raisins and nuts soaked in wine, is the island's pastry. The sea is warm from June to September, and spring brings wildflowers to the hillsides.
