Green Bay is a city at the southern end of the bay of the same name in north-eastern Wisconsin, on the Fox River. It is the home of the Green Bay Packers, the only major professional football team owned by its fans, whose stadium, Lambeau Field, has a hall of fame. The National Railroad Museum and the Neville Public Museum are in the city, and Bay Beach Amusement Park sits on the shore.
North-east of the city, Door County is a narrow peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, with limestone bluffs, sheltered harbours and small villages such as Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay. Lighthouses dot the shore, Peninsula State Park has bluff-top trails above the water, and the cliffs and sea caves of Cave Point look over Lake Michigan. A ferry crosses Death's Door, the strait to Washington Island.
Cherry orchards bloom in May and the fruit ripens in July, and cherries turn up in pies, jam and wine. A fish boil, in which whitefish, potatoes and onions are cooked over a wood fire in a big pot, is the peninsula's signature meal, and cheese curds and bratwurst are Wisconsin staples. Snow arrives early and stays late in winter, and summer and autumn bring walkers and cyclists.
