Grand Rapids grew beside rapids on the Grand River and became known as the Furniture City after its factories supplied the nation in the late nineteenth century. Its downtown has riverside walks, museums and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, which honours the president who grew up here and is buried on its grounds.
Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, on the north-east edge, has large works by Rodin, Calder and others among gardens and a tropical conservatory, while the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Public Museum are downtown. Lake Michigan lies about 50 kilometres west, with dune-backed beaches at Grand Haven and Holland and the art town of Saugatuck among tall sand dunes.
The city calls itself Beer City and has dozens of craft breweries, with cherries, apples and blueberries from the fruit belt of west Michigan, and Michigan wines. Winters bring lake-effect snow, and summers are warm.
