Experience the best of Grand Canyon National Park
Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona protects the Colorado River's vast gorge, over a mile deep, its layered red rock stretching to the horizon.

The Colorado River has cut the Grand Canyon over millions of years, exposing layers of rock that span nearly two billion years. The canyon is about 446 kilometres long, up to 29 kilometres wide and more than 1.8 kilometres deep. The South Rim, at about 2,100 metres, has viewpoints such as Mather Point, Yavapai Point and the Desert View Watchtower, a stone tower designed by Mary Colter in 1932.
Trails such as Bright Angel and South Kaibab descend from the South Rim to the river, where rafting trips run through the rapids, and Phantom Ranch sits on the canyon floor. The North Rim, about 300 metres higher, is cooler and quieter, with forests of aspen and spruce. Havasu Falls, in the neighbouring Havasupai lands, and the Skywalk on Hualapai land to the west lie outside the park. Flagstaff and the red rocks of Sedona lie to the south.
Navajo tacos, fry bread topped with beans, cheese and chile, are a regional favourite, along with prickly-pear sweets and corn dishes from the Southwest. The rims have four seasons: summers are warm and storms build in the afternoon, winters are cold with snow on the South Rim, and the inner canyon is far hotter than the rim above. The skies are very dark at night.
