Gettysburg is a small town in south-central Pennsylvania, surrounded by farmland and low ridges. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought here over three days in July 1863, the largest battle of the American Civil War, and the Union victory is seen as a turning point. The battlefield is now a national military park, covering miles of fields and ridges with hundreds of monuments, cannon and markers.
Little Round Top, Devil's Den and Cemetery Ridge are among the places on the field, and a museum and visitor centre displays a vast cyclorama painting of the battle. In November 1863 President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the soldiers' cemetery. President Eisenhower's farm, next to the battlefield, is also preserved. The Appalachian Trail crosses the South Mountain ridge to the west.
Apple cider, apple butter, fruit pies and doughnuts from Adams County's orchards, and hearty Pennsylvania Dutch dishes such as ham, pot pie and sausage, are the local fare. The town is busiest around the July anniversary and the November remembrance of the Address, and autumn brings orchard harvest festivals.
