Genoa curves around a deep natural harbour with mountains close behind, so its streets climb steeply. It was a maritime republic in the Middle Ages, and the merchant families built palaces along Via Garibaldi and the Strade Nuove, now listed by UNESCO as the Rolli palaces. The cathedral of San Lorenzo has a striped black-and-white façade, and the Lanterna, an old stone lighthouse, marks the western end of the port.

The medieval centre is a maze of vaulted alleys called caruggi. The Porto Antico, the old harbour redeveloped by the Genoese architect Renzo Piano, has an aquarium and a panoramic lift. Staglieno cemetery is known for its marble sculpture, and Boccadasse is a former fishing village of pastel houses. Portofino and the Cinque Terre lie along the coast, reached by train or boat.

Pesto genovese, made with basil, pine nuts and olive oil and mixed with trofie pasta, was born here, and focaccia, farinata and fried seafood come from the bakeries and friggitorie. Pansoti, pasta stuffed with greens, is served with walnut sauce.
