Fukuoka is the biggest city on Kyushu, formed from two old towns, the merchant port of Hakata and the castle town of Fukuoka, on either side of the Naka River. Hakata keeps temples such as Tochoji, with a large wooden seated Buddha, and Shofukuji, said to be Japan's first Zen temple, founded in 1195. The ruins of Fukuoka Castle lie beside Ohori Park, with its large lake and walkways.
In the evening, yatai, open-air food stalls, set up along the Naka River at Nakasu and near Tenjin. The Kushida Shrine leads the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival each July, when teams carry heavy floats at a run through the streets. Dazaifu, with its shrine to the scholar Sugawara no Michizane and its plum blossom, lies about thirty minutes south-east by train, and the beaches of the Itoshima peninsula are to the west.
Hakata ramen, with a cloudy pork-bone broth and thin firm noodles, is the dish the city is known for, and extra noodles are ordered as a refill, a kaedama. Motsunabe, a hotpot of offal, mentaiko, spicy cod roe, and goma saba, sesame mackerel, are local specialities.
