Fremantle sits at the mouth of the Swan River, known to the Noongar people as Walyalup. Its centre keeps a strong stock of nineteenth-century buildings, including the Round House, the oldest surviving public building in Western Australia, and the town hall. Fremantle Prison, built by convicts in the 1850s, is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.
The Fremantle Markets have traded in a Victorian hall since 1897, and the cappuccino strip on South Terrace fills with coffee drinkers. The Western Australian Museum's shipwreck galleries display timbers recovered from the Dutch ship Batavia, lost in 1629. Ferries leave the harbour for Rottnest Island, home of the quokka, and South Beach and Bathers Beach lie close to the centre.
Italian migrants shaped the town's fishing fleet and its coffee, and fresh fish and chips are still eaten beside the Fishing Boat Harbour. Craft breweries by the harbour and old pubs in the side streets fill the evenings. An afternoon sea breeze called the Fremantle Doctor cools the summer heat, and the warm months from November to April suit the beaches best.
