Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 by German settlers and named for Prince Frederick of Prussia, and its broad Main Street is lined with limestone and timber buildings, biergartens, shops and bakeries that still show its heritage. The National Museum of the Pacific War, devoted to the war in the Pacific, stands in the hometown of Admiral Chester Nimitz, in a former hotel built by his grandfather.
Enchanted Rock, a huge dome of pink granite some thirty kilometres north, can be climbed for views across the hills. Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch and national historical park lie to the east, Luckenbach is a tiny dance hall and general store made famous by country music, and the Pedernales River runs through the region. Wildflowers, including bluebonnets, carpet fields in spring, and peach orchards bloom around the town.
Texas Hill Country wines are poured at dozens of tasting rooms, Gillespie County peaches ripen in early summer, and German sausages, schnitzel and strudel sit beside Texas brisket in the restaurants. Spring is the greenest season and the summers are very hot.
