Fort Myers stands on the Caloosahatchee River in south-west Florida, inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and is known as the City of Palms. Thomas Edison built a winter home and laboratory here in 1886, and Henry Ford later bought the house next door; the two estates are now open as a museum with a botanical garden. Royal palms line McGregor Boulevard.
Sanibel and Captiva, two barrier islands reached by causeway, are known for shelling and for the Ding Darling wildlife refuge, where spoonbills and herons feed in mangroves. Fort Myers Beach has a long strip of sand on Estero Island, Koreshan State Park preserves a utopian settlement of the 1890s, and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has a boardwalk through ancient cypress. Naples lies to the south, and the Everglades are within reach. Manatees gather in warm waters in winter.
Stone crab claws, served chilled with mustard sauce, are the local luxury from October to May, along with grouper sandwiches, shrimp and key lime pie. Citrus groves lie inland. Afternoon thunderstorms roll through the hot, humid summers, while winters are dry, mild and sunny, the best season for the beaches.
