Most of the city spreads over Santa Catarina Island, joined to the mainland by bridges, among them the Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, the city's emblem. The old centre has a 19th-century public market, a cathedral on the main square and low colonial houses. Portuguese settlers from the Azores arrived in the 18th century, and their descendants shaped the fishing villages and white churches around the island.

The island has dozens of beaches, from the surf at Joaquina and Praia Mole to calm coves in the north and south. Dunes beside the Lagoa da Conceição, a large lagoon, are used for sandboarding, and trails along the headlands lead to bays that can only be reached on foot. Ribeirão da Ilha and Santo Antônio de Lisboa keep Azorean houses on the water, and farther south the coast is a winter gathering place for southern right whales.

Oysters are the island's pride, farmed in sheltered bays and served by the dozen with lemon, alongside shrimp, fish stews and pirão, a thick porridge made from fish broth. Beach weather peaks from December to March, but the mild winter has its own season, when fishermen net mullet from the beaches and the coastal trails are quiet.
