Detroit stands on the Detroit River, which separates Michigan from Ontario, so that Canada lies south of the downtown skyline. The city made its name as the centre of the American car industry, and its Art Deco skyscrapers, including the Guardian Building with its colourful brick and tile, date from that boom. The Renaissance Center towers on the riverfront, and a riverwalk runs for several kilometres along the water.
The Detroit Institute of Arts houses Diego Rivera's murals of Detroit industry, and the Motown Museum preserves the studio where Motown records were made. In nearby Dearborn, The Henry Ford museum and Greenfield Village trace American innovation. Belle Isle, an island park in the river, has a conservatory, an aquarium and beaches. Eastern Market is a historic food market, and the city is the birthplace of techno music.
Detroit-style pizza, square with crisp cheesy edges, and coney dogs topped with chili are local tastes. The weather has four distinct seasons, with cold, snowy winters, warm summers by the river and colourful autumns, and paczki doughnuts arrive on Fat Tuesday, with Vernors ginger ale to wash them down.
