Destin lies on a narrow neck of land between the Gulf and Choctawhatchee Bay on the Florida Panhandle, in an area called the Emerald Coast for its green water. The beaches are made of fine white quartz sand that squeaks underfoot, and low dunes are covered in sea oats. The town was founded by Leonard Destin, a fisherman who settled here in the 1840s, and it still calls itself the world's luckiest fishing village.

A large fleet of charter boats goes out after red snapper, grouper and marlin, and dolphin-watching cruises leave from the harbour. Crab Island, a sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay, fills with anchored boats on summer days. Henderson Beach State Park keeps a stretch of dunes natural. To the east, the beach towns of the 30A highway, including Seaside, are about half an hour away, and Pensacola lies to the west.

Gulf seafood is the local table: grouper sandwiches, fried shrimp, crab claws, oysters and seafood boils, with key lime pie to finish. The water is warm enough to swim from May to October.
