Daytona Beach lies on Florida's Atlantic coast, where a broad strip of hard-packed sand runs for kilometres and cars are allowed to drive on parts of the beach. Racing began here in the early 1900s, and the Daytona International Speedway, which holds the Daytona 500 each February, is the city's best-known landmark. The boardwalk and Main Street Pier, with arcades and an amusement area, stand at the heart of the beachfront.
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, the tallest in Florida, stands on the south tip of the peninsula, and the Museum of Arts and Sciences has a collection of Cuban art. Bethune-Cookman University keeps the home of the educator Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded the school. St Augustine is about eighty kilometres north, Kennedy Space Center about a hundred kilometres south, and Blue Spring State Park, where manatees gather in winter, lies inland near DeLand.
Daytona is a seaside food town of fried shrimp, oysters, grouper sandwiches and boardwalk snacks, with fish houses near Ponce Inlet. Motorcycle rallies bring crowds in March and October, and race weeks fill the town. The beach is warm and busy in summer, and winters are mild and sunny.
