Dallas grew on the Trinity River as a cotton and cattle trading town and became a centre of oil, banking and technology. Downtown, Dealey Plaza is where President Kennedy was shot in 1963, and the Sixth Floor Museum in the former book depository tells the story. Reunion Tower, topped with a lit ball, rises near Union Station. A deck park, Klyde Warren Park, built over a freeway, links downtown to the Arts District.
The Arts District has the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Winspear Opera House, all within walking distance. Deep Ellum, an old warehouse neighbourhood, is known for live music and murals, and the Dallas Arboretum beside White Rock Lake has large seasonal flower displays. Fort Worth, with its Stockyards where cattle are driven down the street, and the Cowboys' stadium in Arlington lie about forty minutes west.
Tex-Mex, barbecue and chicken-fried steak dominate the menus, and the frozen margarita machine was invented here in 1971. The State Fair of Texas, with its giant Big Tex figure and fried food on sticks, runs each autumn at Fair Park.
