Colorado Springs lies on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, where the plains meet Pikes Peak, a 4,302-metre summit that dominates the skyline. The city was laid out in 1871 as a resort and still keeps wide streets, parks and Victorian buildings. Garden of the Gods, a public park of tall red sandstone fins and spires set against the mountains, is its best-known sight.
Manitou Springs, an old spa town, has soda springs and a cog railway that climbs Pikes Peak, and a road also reaches the summit. The canyons of Cheyenne Mountain have waterfalls, among them Seven Falls. The Cadet Chapel at the US Air Force Academy, with its row of aluminium spires, is a modernist landmark. The Royal Gorge canyon and the fossil beds of Florissant lie within a drive.
Colorado cooking brings green chile smothered burritos, bison burgers, trout and craft beer to the table. The air is dry and sunny, winters are cold but snow melts quickly, and summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. A visit to Pikes Peak in 1893 inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write the poem America the Beautiful.
