Cleveland stands on the south shore of Lake Erie where the Cuyahoga River reaches the lake, a former steel and shipping city now known for its museums and music. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in a glass pyramid designed by I. M. Pei, sits on the lakefront beside the Great Lakes Science Center. The West Side Market, in a brick hall with a clock tower, has sold meat, produce and baked goods since 1912.

University Circle, east of downtown, groups the Cleveland Museum of Art, the botanical garden, Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra, and several museums around a green. Playhouse Square is a cluster of restored theatres. South of the city, Cuyahoga Valley National Park has waterfalls, woodland, a towpath trail along the old canal and a scenic railway.

Pierogi, filled dumplings from the city's Polish and Slovak communities, corned beef sandwiches and the Polish Boy, a kielbasa sausage in a bun topped with fries, coleslaw and barbecue sauce, are the city's food, with perch and walleye from Lake Erie. Lake-effect snow whitens the winters, summers suit festivals and lake walks, and autumn is bright.
