Clearwater Beach is on a barrier island reached by causeway from the mainland city of Clearwater, west of Tampa on Florida's Gulf coast. Its fine white sand slopes gently into warm, shallow water. Pier 60, at the heart of the beach, holds an evening sunset celebration with street performers and craft stalls, and a nearby marine rescue centre cares for dolphins and sea turtles.

Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island State Parks, to the north, are undeveloped barrier islands with nature trails and shelling, and Caladesi can be reached by ferry or kayak. Tarpon Springs, a Greek sponge-diving community with Greek bakeries and restaurants, is a short drive north. St Petersburg, with its museums and pier, lies farther south on the same peninsula.

Grouper sandwiches, shrimp, stone crab in season and key lime pie are the staples, with Cuban sandwiches from nearby Tampa and Greek pastries from Tarpon Springs. Manatees visit warmer waters in winter. Summers are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are mild and dry.
