Experience the best of Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre are five colourful fishing villages strung along the steep Ligurian coast, linked by trails, trains and boats above the sea.

The Cinque Terre are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, five villages on a rugged stretch of the Ligurian coast in north-west Italy. Pastel houses cling to cliffs above tiny harbours, and centuries of dry-stone terraces climb the slopes, planted with vines, olives and lemon trees. The coast is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A railway runs through tunnels between the villages, boats link them in season, and footpaths along the coast and over the hills connect them. Vernazza has a small harbour and a castle tower, Monterosso has the longest sandy beach, and Corniglia is the only village not on the water, reached from the station by a long flight of steps. La Spezia is the gateway, and Portovenere, a harbour town with a Gothic church on a rock, lies a short way south-east.
Focaccia, pesto and trofie pasta come from the Ligurian kitchen, and salted anchovies from Monterosso are a local pride, alongside fried seafood. Sciacchetrà, a sweet wine made from dried grapes, is the speciality of the terraces, and the crisp dry whites go with fish. Spring and early autumn suit the walking paths best.
