Charlotte, named for Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, is the Queen City of North Carolina and the state's largest city, a financial centre whose glass towers rise from Uptown. The NASCAR Hall of Fame tells the story of stock car racing, which has deep roots in the Carolinas, and Charlotte Motor Speedway lies to the north at Concord. The Mint Museum, which began in the city's old branch mint, and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art hold American and European art.
Charlotte's older districts include NoDa, an arts quarter of galleries and murals, and South End, with converted mills, breweries and a light-rail line. Freedom Park and the greenways of Little Sugar Creek offer green space near downtown. Lake Norman, north of the city, is a lake for boating, and Reed Gold Mine near Midland marks the site of the first documented gold find in the United States, in 1799.
Carolina barbecue, slow-cooked pork with a vinegar-based sauce, is served with coleslaw, hushpuppies and sweet tea, and shrimp and grits and pimento cheese are other Southern staples. Local breweries pour craft beer. Spring brings dogwood and azalea blossom, summers are hot and humid, and the autumn is long and mild.
