The walled old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of cobbled streets and squares lined with pastel houses, churches and bougainvillea. The Clock Tower gate leads into Plaza de los Coches, and the cathedral, the Church of San Pedro Claver and the Palace of the Inquisition are all within a few blocks. Walking the thick ramparts at sunset is a local ritual.

Getsemaní, just outside the walls, is a lively neighbourhood of street art, small plazas and bars. The massive Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the largest fortress Spain built in its colonies, guards the city from a hill, and the modern towers of Bocagrande line the beach. Boats head out to the Rosario Islands, with their coral reefs and white sand, and to the beaches of Barú.

Coastal cooking brings fried fish with coconut rice and patacones, ceviche and arepas de huevo, along with fresh tropical juices. The weather is hot and humid all year; the dry months from December to April are the most popular, while autumn is the wettest time. Evenings, when the sea breeze picks up, bring the city to life.
