Pereira is the capital of Risaralda department, set among green Andean hills in the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, which UNESCO listed in 2011. The Plaza de Bolívar holds Bolívar Desnudo, a bronze statue of the liberator on horseback, famously unclothed, by the sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt. The Viaducto César Gaviria Trujillo, a cable-stayed bridge, links the city with its neighbour Dosquebradas across a deep valley.
Coffee farms in the surrounding hills show visitors the plants, the drying patios and the mills, and Santa Rosa de Cabal, to the east, has hot springs fed from the high mountains. Above them rise the snowy peaks of Los Nevados National Natural Park, which includes the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. To the south, Salento and the Cocora Valley, where wax palms, Colombia's national tree, soar to great heights, are within easy reach.
Breakfast is arepas with eggs scrambled with tomato and onion, and the hearty regional plate is the bandeja paisa, a heaped platter of beans, rice, plantain, pork crackling and egg. Coffee is the pride of the region, served black and sweet in small cups, and aguapanela, a warm drink of unrefined cane sugar, is poured on cooler mornings. Rain falls through much of the year, with drier spells from December to February and in mid-year.
