Experience the best of Bogotá
Bogotá, Colombia's capital, sits high in the Andes at around 2,600 metres, with a colonial old quarter, a famed gold museum and a hilltop church.

La Candelaria, the old quarter, lies at the foot of the eastern hills, with streets of colonial houses, galleries and murals around Plaza de Bolívar and its cathedral. The Gold Museum holds thousands of pre-Hispanic gold objects, and the Botero Museum shows the plump figures of Fernando Botero, who gave the city his collection. Above town, a funicular and cable car rise to Monserrate, a white church at over 3,100 metres.
Street art covers walls across the city, Usaquén's weekend market sells crafts and food, and on Sundays many main roads close to cars for cyclists. North of Bogotá, the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is carved inside an underground salt mine, and Lake Guatavita is linked to the El Dorado legend. The coffee region around Salento lies farther west, a long road journey or a short flight away.
The classic dish is ajiaco, a chicken and potato soup served with corn, capers and cream. Hot chocolate comes with a slab of cheese to melt in it, and tamales, arepas and fresh fruit juices fill the markets. Temperatures stay cool all year, with rainier spells in spring and autumn; December to March and July to August are the driest months, and an umbrella is always sensible.
