San Andrés is a small, low coral island in the western Caribbean, part of an archipelago with Providencia and Santa Catalina. It lies roughly 200 km off the coast of Nicaragua, far from the Colombian mainland. Its Raizal people speak an English-based creole, and the First Baptist Church on the hill of La Loma dates from 1844.
A road circles the island, passing West View, a rocky shelf where swimmers join fish in clear water, and the Hoyo Soplador, a blowhole that shoots seawater up through the rock at the southern end. Johnny Cay, a small islet of palms and white sand, is reached by boat from the main beach. The sea here is known for its bands of colour, and Providencia, to the north, is part of the Seaflower biosphere reserve.
Rondón, a stew of fish, snail and root vegetables simmered in coconut milk, is the island's signature dish. The dry months from December to April are the sunniest, while the rest of the year brings more showers. Grilled lobster, fried fish and coconut cakes line the beach stalls.
