Salento sits in Quindío department at around 1,900 metres in the Central Andes, in the heart of the coffee region. Houses along Calle Real are painted in bright colours, with carved wooden balconies and doors, and the main square is ringed with craft shops and cafés. A stairway climbs to a lookout above the rooftops, and old Willys jeeps parked on the plaza carry passengers to the valley.
The Cocora Valley, a short ride away, is the main sight: slopes of cloud forest and pasture dotted with Quindío wax palms, the national tree of Colombia and among the tallest palms in the world, reaching well over forty metres. Trails lead through the valley towards Los Nevados National Park. Coffee farms around town offer tastings and walks among the bushes, and this part of the country is a UNESCO-listed coffee landscape.
Trout from nearby streams, served with patacones, fried green plantain, is the town's signature meal, followed by hot chocolate with a slice of cheese melting into it. Coffee arrives fresh from local farms. The region is green and damp, with the driest spells from December to February and again in July and August.
