Cape Canaveral is a small city on a barrier island on Florida's Atlantic coast, beside the headland where American rockets have lifted off since the 1950s. Port Canaveral is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, and to the north, on Merritt Island, the Kennedy Space Center has launch pads, a visitor complex and exhibits on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programmes.

Cocoa Beach, with its long pier and surf breaks, is a few kilometres south, and Jetty Park at the port entrance is a spot to watch ships and launches. Canaveral National Seashore, to the north, protects about forty kilometres of undeveloped beach where sea turtles nest, and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge has manatees, alligators and wading birds. Orlando's theme parks are about an hour's drive inland.

Fresh seafood from Port Canaveral's docks is the draw, with shrimp and grouper served at waterfront restaurants, and the Indian River region is known for its citrus. Sea turtles nest on the beaches in summer. The climate is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms in summer and mild, sunny winters.
