Experience the best of Cagliari
Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, is a hilltop port of medieval towers, Roman ruins and a long city beach, with flamingos on its salt lagoons.

Cagliari rises on a limestone hill above the Gulf of Cagliari, on the southern coast of Sardinia. The walled Castello quarter at the top holds the Pisan towers of San Pancrazio and the Elephant, the cathedral with its Baroque interior and terraces with sea views. A Roman amphitheatre cut into the rock, from the second century, survives lower down, and the Bastione di Saint Remy is a monumental stairway and terrace.
The Poetto, a long sandy city beach, curves beneath the Sella del Diavolo, a rocky headland, and the Molentargius salt pans, a protected nature park, often have pink flamingos. The ruins of Nora, a Phoenician and Roman town on a promontory, lie to the south-west, and the beaches of Villasimius stretch along the coast to the east.
Sardinian cooking is built on seafood and sheep: fregola with clams, bottarga, cured grey mullet roe, grated over pasta, malloreddus, small gnocchi, suckling pig and pecorino cheese, and seadas, fried pastries filled with cheese and drizzled with honey. Cannonau red and Vermentino white are the island wines. Summers are warm and dry and winters mild, and each May the procession of Sant'Efisio crosses the city.
