Experience the best of Burlington

Burlington stands on a hill above Lake Champlain, facing the Adirondack Mountains across the water, with the Green Mountains rising to the east. It is Vermont's largest city and home to the University of Vermont. Church Street Marketplace, a long, traffic-free brick street of shops, cafés and street performers, runs up from the lake. The waterfront has a park and a boardwalk, and a bike path runs along the shore and out onto a causeway in the lake.

ECHO, a science centre with an aquarium, stands on the waterfront, and the Shelburne Museum, an Americana collection spread over many buildings and including a lake steamboat, lies about ten kilometres south. Ferries cross the lake to Port Kent in New York, and the Champlain Islands stretch to the north. Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak, and the village of Stowe lie to the east, and Montreal is a couple of hours' drive north.

Maple syrup, sharp cheddar, craft beer and apple cider doughnuts are Vermont staples, sold at the city's farmers' market and in its cafés. In October the hills turn red and orange, winter brings snow and skiing, and summer is for swimming and sailing on the lake.
