Buffalo stands on the eastern shore of Lake Erie where the Niagara River begins, in western New York State. As the western end of the Erie Canal, it grew into a grain and rail city and left behind remarkable buildings: the Art Deco City Hall with its tall tower, Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building, and the Darwin Martin House, a Prairie-style house by Frank Lloyd Wright. Frederick Law Olmsted laid out its parks and tree-lined parkways.
Canalside, the restored waterfront where the canal met the lake, has boat rides, bikes and ice skating in winter. The Buffalo AKG Art Museum, long known as the Albright-Knox, is a major museum of modern art, and the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, where President McKinley was shot, is remembered at the Buffalo History Museum. Niagara Falls lies about thirty kilometres north, and the wineries of Lake Erie lie to the south-west.
Buffalo wings, chicken wings fried and tossed in hot sauce, are said to have been invented in the city, and beef on weck, roast beef on a salt-and-caraway roll, is another local sandwich. Polish heritage brings pierogi and the Dyngus Day celebrations after Easter, and sponge candy is a sweet local treat. Winters bring heavy lake-effect snow, while summers are warm and pleasant by the lake.
