Brindisi has been a harbour since Roman times, and its natural port, a bay with two inlets said to resemble a stag's antlers, made it the gateway to Greece and the East. The Via Appia, the Roman road from Rome, ended here, and a tall Roman column near the waterfront marks the spot. The poet Virgil died in Brindisi in 19 BC. The Swabian Castle and the Aragonese Alfonsino fort guard the harbour.
The church of Santa Maria del Casale, built around 1300, has medieval frescoes, and the cathedral and a small archaeological museum stand in the old town. South of Brindisi, Lecce, the baroque city of Salento, is about forty kilometres away, and the nature reserve of Torre Guaceto is on the coast to the north. Ostuni, a whitewashed hill town, and Alberobello, with its conical-roofed trulli, lie inland.
Orecchiette with turnip tops, taralli, ring-shaped crackers, and raw seafood, including sea urchins, are standard Puglian fare, and local olive oil is poured freely. Red wines such as Negroamaro and Primitivo come from the Salento countryside. Hot dry summers suit the beaches of the coast.
