Breckenridge sits at about 2,900 metres in the Rocky Mountains, in Summit County, a former gold-mining town founded in 1859. Main Street keeps rows of Victorian wooden storefronts, miners' cabins and brightly painted houses from that era, now filled with shops, restaurants and galleries. The ski slopes of the Tenmile Range rise directly behind town, and the Blue River runs through the centre.
In winter the town is a ski resort. In summer the same slopes serve hikers and mountain bikers, with trails to alpine lakes and old mining ruins. The Continental Divide crosses Hoosier Pass to the south, close to Quandary Peak, which rises over 4,300 metres, and Dillon Reservoir spreads below the mountains to the north. Boreas Pass follows an old narrow-gauge railway route over the range.
Mountain cooking in Breckenridge runs to elk and bison, Colorado green chile, trout, and hearty fondue after a day on the slopes, with craft beer and spirits from local distilleries. Winters bring deep snow and a long ski season; summer days are warm and the nights cool, and aspen leaves turn gold in late September.
