Branson lies in the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri, where forested hills fall to Lake Taneycomo and the larger Table Rock Lake. Since the 1960s it has become a centre of live entertainment, with dozens of theatres along Highway 76 staging country and gospel music, comedy, magic and family shows. The old downtown beside the lake keeps its early storefronts, and Branson Landing is a waterfront district.

An Ozark-themed amusement park with working craftspeople is the best-known attraction, and an outdoor drama based on a novel of 1907 tells a story of the hills. Table Rock Lake has bass fishing, boating and scenic cruises, and Table Rock Dam is a fine viewpoint. Springfield lies to the north, and the Arkansas town of Eureka Springs is across the state line to the south-west.

Ozark cooking brings fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, barbecue and catfish, with fudge shops on the main streets. Summer is the lake season, autumn leaves colour the hills, and the town is lit with Christmas displays in the weeks before the holiday.
