Experience the best of Boise

Boise is the capital of Idaho, a green city on the Boise River beneath the foothills, with a riverside path, Basque heritage and the outdoors at its door.

Boise grew along the Boise River from a military post and gold-rush supply town in the 1860s, and its name is said to come from French trappers who called the wooded valley les bois. The Idaho State Capitol, a sandstone building with a dome, is heated by geothermal water, and the Greenbelt, a path of about 40 kilometres, follows the river through parks and the university campus. The Old Idaho Penitentiary is now a museum, and Julia Davis Park holds a zoo and museums.

Boise has one of the largest Basque communities in the United States, centred on the Basque Block downtown, with a museum, restaurants and the Jaialdi festival held every five years. Trails in the Boise Foothills climb above town, Table Rock, a sandstone butte, looks over the city, and the Bogus Basin ski area lies about 25 kilometres to the north. Idaho City, a gold-rush town, the Snake River Birds of Prey area and the Sawtooth Mountains all lie within a day's drive.

Idaho potatoes, trout and huckleberries feature on menus, and Basque restaurants serve chorizo, croquetas, lamb and paella. Snake River Valley wines and craft beers are widely poured. Dry summer days are made for floating the river, and winters bring snow to the foothills.
