Bend sits at about 1,100 metres on the Deschutes River, on the dry eastern side of the Cascade Range in central Oregon, with a line of snowy volcanoes along the western horizon, the Three Sisters among them. The river runs through town, widening at Mirror Pond beside Drake Park, and the old mill district beside it has been turned into shops, paths and places to float. Pilot Butte, a small cinder cone inside the city, can be climbed for views of the peaks.
Mount Bachelor, a ski mountain about 35 kilometres south-west, draws skiers and snowboarders in winter and hikers in summer. Newberry National Volcanic Monument, to the south, has lava flows, a lava-tube cave, an obsidian flow and two crater lakes. Smith Rock State Park, north of town, has orange cliffs beloved by climbers, and Tumalo Falls drops in a wooded canyon in the hills west of Bend.
Bend is a craft-beer town, with dozens of breweries and clusters of food trucks, and menus lean on local meat, Oregon hazelnuts and berries. Summers are sunny and dry with cool nights, the aspens colour in autumn, and snow lies on the mountains from late autumn to spring.
