Experience the best of Atlanta

Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, a green, hilly city known for its civil rights sites, museums, parks, a vast airport and Southern cooking.

Atlanta grew from a railway junction laid out in 1837, was burned during the Civil War in 1864, and was rebuilt. It sits on rolling hills at about 320 metres and is covered in so many trees that it calls itself the city in a forest. Sweet Auburn is the neighbourhood where Martin Luther King Jr. was born and preached, and the national historical park there keeps his birth home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights stands near Centennial Olympic Park, built for the 1996 Games, with a large aquarium and other attractions around it. The High Museum of Art, the Fox Theatre, a Moorish-style theatre of 1929, and the Atlanta History Center show other sides of the city. Piedmont Park and the BeltLine, a trail on old railway lines, wind through neighbourhoods, and Stone Mountain, a vast granite dome, is about 25 kilometres east.

Southern cooking is everywhere: fried chicken, biscuits, collard greens, grits, barbecue and peach cobbler, with sweet tea on the side, and Buford Highway has a strip of Korean, Vietnamese, Mexican and Chinese restaurants. Dogwoods and azaleas bloom across the city in spring.
