Experience the best of Asheville

Asheville, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, is an arts-minded mountain city of Art Deco buildings, craft breweries and a famous estate.

Asheville sits in a basin of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, where the French Broad River meets the Swannanoa. Its downtown is full of Art Deco buildings from the 1920s, including the City Building, and the Basilica of St Lawrence, with its elliptical dome, and the streets have bookshops, galleries and street musicians.

The Biltmore Estate, a 250-room château built for George Vanderbilt in the 1890s, is the largest privately owned house in the United States, set in gardens landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. The Blue Ridge Parkway winds along the mountain crests nearby, Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, rises to the north-east, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies to the west. The River Arts District has studios in old industrial buildings.

Craft beer is a point of pride, with dozens of breweries, and Appalachian cooking brings biscuits, trout, pimento cheese, barbecue, apples and cider. Fiddle and banjo music from the mountains is heard in local venues. Rhododendrons bloom in early summer, and the autumn leaves peak in October.
