Arezzo climbs a hill in eastern Tuscany, an Etruscan and Roman town with a medieval core. Piazza Grande, a sloping square lined with palaces, loggias and the apse of a Romanesque church, hosts a jousting tournament, the Giostra del Saracino, held in June and September. Petrarch was born here in 1304, and so was the painter and writer Giorgio Vasari, in 1511. Scenes of the film Life Is Beautiful were shot in the old town.
The Basilica of San Francesco holds Piero della Francesca's frescoes of the Legend of the True Cross, among the great works of the early Renaissance. The Romanesque church of Pieve di Santa Maria has an arcaded façade of stacked columns, and a Roman amphitheatre lies near the centre. An antiques fair fills the streets on the first weekend of each month. Cortona and Sansepolcro are within reach, as are the monasteries of the Casentino forests.
The Val di Chiana supplies Chianina beef for a thick bistecca, and ribollita, a bread and bean soup, and pappardelle with wild boar are on many menus. Arezzo is a centre of Italian gold jewellery, and its shops show it. The surrounding hills yield Chianti and the sweet Vin Santo, and autumn brings truffles and mushrooms to the menus.
