Anchorage sits between Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains in south-central Alaska, and it is the state's largest city. It began as a railway construction camp in 1915, and the Good Friday earthquake of 1964, among the strongest ever recorded, reshaped it; Earthquake Park marks the story. The Anchorage Museum covers art, history and science, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center presents the state's Indigenous cultures.
The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail follows the inlet for kilometres, Flattop Mountain is a popular climb in Chugach State Park, and Potter Marsh is a boardwalk wetland for birdwatching. The Seward Highway runs along Turnagain Arm, where beluga whales sometimes swim, to Portage Glacier and the ski village of Girdwood. A wildlife centre shelters bears and moose, and on clear days Denali is visible far to the north.
Wild salmon, halibut, king crab and reindeer sausage are the local specialities, with sourdough bread and craft beer. In midsummer the sun stays up for about nineteen hours, while winter days are short and the aurora can colour the sky. The Iditarod sled-dog race has its ceremonial start downtown in March, and the Fur Rendezvous winter festival fills the late-winter days.
