Amalfi tumbles down a narrow gorge to a small harbour. In the Middle Ages it was one of Italy's great maritime republics, trading across the Mediterranean, and the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, with its striped facade, bronze doors and cloister, recalls that wealth. A broad flight of steps climbs to the cathedral from the piazza, and lanes behind the main street are lined with shops selling lemon products and paper.
The Museum of Paper explains the old craft in a medieval mill, and the Valley of the Mills above town has the ruins of old paper mills beside a stream. Footpaths such as the Path of the Gods link hill villages along the cliffs, Ravello, with its hilltop gardens and music festival, sits high above, and Atrani, Positano and Praiano are along the coast. Boats reach Capri and the sea grottoes of Conca dei Marini.
Lemons, grown on terraces under nets, flavour limoncello, pastries and the lemon-sponge delizia, and the town's seafood includes fried anchovies and pasta with clams. The best months are April to June and September to October; July and August bring heat and crowds on the narrow coast road, and some restaurants and hotels close over winter.
