About Assisi
Assisi, in Umbria, is a pink-stone hill town and pilgrimage centre, the birthplace of St Francis and home to a basilica covered in frescoes.
Assisi spreads across the slope of Mount Subasio, its buildings of pale pink and white limestone. The Basilica of St Francis, built in the thirteenth century over the saint's tomb, has two churches stacked one above the other, with frescoes by Giotto and his circle and by Cimabue. The basilica and the town form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Top-ranked sights in Assisi: Basilica of St. Francis (Basilica di San Francesco), Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (Basilica di San Francesco d’Assisi) , Basilica of St. Clare (Basilica di Santa Chiara).
