Assisi spreads across the slope of Mount Subasio, its buildings of pale pink and white limestone. The Basilica of St Francis, built in the thirteenth century over the saint's tomb, has two churches stacked one above the other, with frescoes by Giotto and his circle and by Cimabue. The basilica and the town form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the Piazza del Comune, a Roman temple of Minerva with a columned front is now a church, and the medieval Rocca Maggiore fortress crowns the hill. The Basilica of Santa Chiara, with striped walls, holds the tomb of St Clare. Down on the plain, Santa Maria degli Angeli shelters the tiny Porziuncola chapel, and above the town the Eremo delle Carceri hermitage stands among the oaks of Mount Subasio.
Torta al testo, a flatbread filled with greens or cured meats, strangozzi pasta with black truffle and lentils from Castelluccio are Umbrian staples, with olive oil from the surrounding hills and Sagrantino wine from nearby Montefalco. Calendimaggio, a spring festival of costume and music, divides the town into two rival halves. Perugia, Spello and Spoleto are within easy reach.
