Itinerary

  1. As the audio guides play commentary based on your gps location, you can create your own itinerary along the tour route to match your interests and schedule. Or you can use our trip planners for our suggestions on half, full or multi day itineraries. Some of the many highlights are listed below;

    8 h

  2. For a scenic drive high above the Copper Country, you'll head up Brockway Mountain. It’s the highest above-sea-level drive between the Allegheny and Rocky Mountain ranges, and the views (and birdwatching!) are stunning.

    1 h

  3. Copper Harbor represents the end of the road - or at least as far as there is to travel on the Keweenaw Peninsular. Home to just 150 permanent residents, it's a fine place to both play and relax, with access to great beaches and world class biking trails. Copper Harbor is also the launch point for the ferry to Isle Royale National Park.

    1 h

  4. As you make your way from beach to beach and bay to bay, you are constantly reminded that in it's angriest mood, Lake Superior's waters can be filled with peril and danger. Lighthouses were a literal beacon of safety for the mariners. The 150 year old octagonal lighthouse and museum at Eagle Harbor is quite a charming sight!

    1 h

  5. The Upper Peninsula has more than 300 waterfalls. You’ll stop at two on this trip, one of them being the pleasing Eagle River Falls. If you love chasing waterfalls, we'll have tips and suggestions for long and short hikes - it's a whole extra adventure.

    1 h

  6. If you can’t get to the west coast to see the giant sequoias, you’ll get to see the northern equivalent on a walking trail through the Estivant Pines. The grove has pines that are more than 300 years old and rise up more than 125 feet.

    1 h

  7. This extraordinarily well-preserved Army fort from 1844 is available to visit, and has local history re-enactors to guide you through. The Army built it to keep the peace between miners and the Indigenous people, but there were really never any problems to speak of. Admission to Fort Wilkins is free, however a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Fort Wilkins State Park.

    1 min

  8. By area, Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the entire world. The shore you’ll be driving along is gorgeous thanks to both beautiful volcanic rock formations and stunning expanses of sky and water. There are endless places where you can stop and get onto the shore to do some beachcombing, or go swimming on a warm summer's day.

    1 h

  9. The most visited experience was once called Old Reliable because of how continuously profitable the site was, Quincy Mine is one of the best preserved mines in the Copper Country. Don’t miss the underground tour and the only cogwheel tram operating in the Midwest.

    1 h

  10. This seasonal bakery sells boozy cakes and muffins as big as your head, plus other goodies. And it’s run by monks living in a beautiful monastery in the woods, surrounded by the local ingredients going into the treats at the bakery.

About Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula is Michigan's northern wilderness, a long forested land between three Great Lakes, with sandstone cliffs, waterfalls and copper towns.

The Upper Peninsula, called the U.P. by its people, is the northern part of Michigan, a long peninsula between Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, linked to the Lower Peninsula by the Mackinac Bridge. Forest covers most of it, broken by lakes, rivers and rocky shore, and the towns are small and far apart. Marquette, on Lake Superior, is its largest city, with ore docks and a rocky park on a headland.

Top-ranked sights in Upper Peninsula: Mackinac Island State Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
