Excellent coffee, excellent walking, and excellent guides. The walk along the river was relatively easy and incredibly interesting. We were introduced to native trees as we walked and our guide explained a little about the geology and environmental factors that helped to form both the river and Japanese culture. Lunch was homemade and very tasty and the specialty coffee was excellent. Go at the start of your trip to Takayama for a better understanding of the place; the guides are happy to share recommendations. Delightful.

  • 5A perfect day in nature

This was a true highlight to our stay in Takayama (and Japan). The hosts couldn’t have been more knowledgeable, friendly and caring and elevated what would have already been an amazing trip to something we will remember for a long time. Being introduced to sawanobori (Japanese River Trekking) was so much fun and has made me want to return to Japan to do more of this amazing style of experiencing nature. It really was unlike anything I’ve ever done in my life. The coffee enthusiast in me was even more excited when I was brewed a Geisha coffee, in the middle of the river, the scenery could not be more perfect and the coffee delicious. Everything about the trip was authentic, the guides made the soup for lunch themselves, then sandwich used bread from a local bakery and every detail was so well thought out. I highly recommend anyone visiting Takayama to make this trip a must do - honestly, it’s worth coming to Takayama for alone!

  • 5An Unforgettable Adventure of a Lifetime!

This was truly an adventure of a lifetime — an experience our whole family will never forget! ❤️ From the very beginning, everything was absolutely incredible. The trekking through the water was spectacular: walking through the river, climbing over rocks, discovering the surrounding nature and listening to fascinating stories about the local landscape, culture and traditions. Every part of the experience felt exciting, authentic and beautifully organized. Our children were so happy, and honestly, so were we! 😍 It was the perfect combination of adventure, nature, fun and discovery. And then came the absolute highlight — lunch in the middle of nature, right by the river. It was magical. Sitting there surrounded by the mountains, rocks, water and incredible scenery felt like something from a movie. Such a special moment and something we will remember for years. And the guides… WOW! They were simply the guides of your dreams. Warm, professional, funny, attentive, knowledgeable and incredibly caring. We felt completely safe with them while still having a real adventure. They made the entire experience even more special. We travel a lot and have done many different activities around the world, but this was truly next level. One of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip to Japan. If you are looking for something beyond an ordinary tour — something exciting, beautiful, authentic and unforgettable — DO THIS! We cannot recommend it highly enough. 10/10 is not enough. Absolutely unforgettable! ❤️🇯🇵

About Takayama

Takayama, in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, is a well-kept Edo-period town of dark wooden merchant houses, sake breweries and a morning market.

Takayama lies in the Hida region of the Japanese Alps, in a high basin ringed by mountains. Its old town, Sanmachi Suji, keeps three streets of dark timber merchant houses from the Edo period, with latticed fronts and sake breweries marked by cedar-ball signs hanging from the eaves. Takayama Jinya, the former magistrate's office, is one of the last of its kind in Japan.

Top-ranked sights in Takayama: Takayama Morning Markets (Asaichi), Sannomachi Street (Sanmachi Suji), Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine & Festival Floats Exhibition Hall.
